Palakad: IIT Palakkad has developed a new sensor technology that can detect drivers falling asleep while driving and alert them to distracted driving. The new system will help reduce traffic accidents.

Typical driver monitoring systems use a camera to monitor the driver's attention and facial movements. But the new system does not require a camera. Special touch sensors attached to the steering wheel detect the position of the driver's hands.
The sensor can detect whether the driver is controlling the steering wheel with both hands and whether the hands have been removed from the steering wheel for a long time. If the driver falls asleep or loses concentration while driving, it can recognize the danger and warn.
The sensor is designed to work in different weather conditions, day and night. Another advantage is lower cost and fewer privacy issues compared to camera-based systems.
The system was also successful in tests conducted on a prototype steering wheel equipped with specially designed sensors, the researchers said. The study has also received an Indian patent.
In addition to driver safety in vehicles, the researchers estimate that this technology can be used in areas such as robotics and smart ICU beds in hospitals.
