PALAKKAD: Tension prevailed as Congress workers locked the Public Works Department (PWD) office in protest against the delay in commencing the construction of the Kulappully-Shoranur road. The workers arrived at the office around 11 AM, staging a strong protest over the stalled road renovation works.

As the Assistant Engineer was not in the office, the workers asked the other officials to step out and locked the office premises. This action was taken demanding that in the absence of senior officials, other staff members need not remain inside. The police attempted to pacify the workers who staged a sit-in protest in front of the office, but the efforts failed.
Although the Assistant Engineer arrived later, the agitation continued as the response was deemed unsatisfactory, with the protesters demanding the presence of the Executive Engineer. Subsequently, V.K. Sreekandan, MP, contacted the Executive Engineer over the phone, following which he arrived at the office by 3 PM.

The protest was called off only after the authorities gave assurances that potholes would be temporarily filled and works completed within three days, and that a permanent solution would be found by completing high-standard road construction after a month and a half. DCC Vice President T.H. Firoz Babu, K. Krishnakumar, V.K. Sreekrishnan, T.K. Basheer, and others led the agitation.
