For those looking to closely explore Palakkad's rich history, agrarian culture, and artistic and musical heritage, the Palakkad District Heritage Museum at Chathapuram, Kalpathy, offers a distinct and enriching experience.
The museum provides a wonderful opportunity for visitors to the district to acquaint themselves with the region's heritage, lifestyle, and art forms all under one roof.
Inaugurated on February 11, 2021, by the then Minister for Archaeology, Archives, and Museums, Ramachandran Kadannappally, the museum houses six distinct galleries. Each gallery has been curated by blending Palakkad's agricultural backdrop with its rich traditions in art and music.
Six Galleries, Six Unique Experiences

Divided into six zones—Utbhavam, Udayam, Marathakam, Utsavam, Navarasam, and Puranam—the museum showcases the diverse moods of Palakkad across the Malayalam calendar year, beginning with the month of Chingam and concluding with Karkidakam.
Visitors to the museum are first welcomed by the Utbhavam (Origin) gallery. This section features an introductory video encompassing the history of the origin of Panchavadyam, palmyra trees, paddy fields, and the signature breeze of Palakkad, alongside visual depictions highlighting the region's uniqueness.
Following this, the Udayam (Dawn) gallery introduces visitors to classical and folk art forms such as Kathakali, Theyyam, and Mohiniyattam, alongside major festivals like Onam, Navaratri, and the Kalpathy Chariot Festival (Ratholsavam). Serpent worship, Kalam Ezhuthu, traditional songs, and the musical instruments used in these rituals are also special highlights of this gallery.

Shedding light on the lifestyles of Palakkad's indigenous tribal communities who live in harmony with nature is the Marathakam (Emerald) gallery. The lifestyles, art forms, and musical instruments of tribal groups such as the Malayar, Iravalar, and Irular are on display here.
The diversity of the festive season spanning from the Malayalam month of Makaram to Medam is presented in the Utsavam (Festival) gallery. Along with a map detailing the migration history of Kerala Muslims, this section features artistic representations of traditional performances like Oppana, Duffmutt, Arbanamutt, and Nercha, as well as celebrations such as Vela, Pooram, Kuthirayeduppu, and Ratholsavam.
The Navarasam gallery introduces the costumes and accompanying musical instruments of Palakkad's native traditional art forms, namely Thullal, Tholpavakoothu (shadow puppetry), and Porattunadakam.
Concluding the journey through the six galleries is the Puranam (Mythology/History) gallery. Along with a summary of the exhibits seen so far, this space is equipped with touch-screen kiosks and audio-visual guides. Visitors can also view a vast digital art archive introducing the renowned artists who have brought acclaim to Palakkad.
Helping visitors understand Palakkad's history, culture, and artistic heritage in a short span of time, this museum is equally beneficial for students, history enthusiasts, and tourists alike.
