Declared the first Heritage Village in Kerala by the state government, Kalpathi is a living museum of ancient Tamil Brahmin culture and customs.
1. Sri Visalakshi Sametha Viswanathaswamy Temple
Historical records indicate that Sri Vishwanathaswamy Temple, located on the banks of the Kalpathipuzha, was built in 1425 AD (600 AD) under the patronage of the Palakkad king Sekharivarma royal family. Devotees command this temple the same sanctity as Vishwanath Temple in Kashi, hence it is also known as 'Dakshina Kashi'.
2. Traditional Agrahara Ways
The biggest feature of Kalpathi is the Agraharas here. Traditional houses built with shared walls, front porches, courtyards and thatched roofs remain unchanged today. These agraharas are spread over four main villages namely Old Kalpathi, New Kalpathi, Chathapuram and Govindarajapuram.
3. The world famous Kalpathi Rathotsavam
Kalpathi Rathotsavam, held every year at the end of the month of Libra (month of November), is one of the biggest festivals in South India. The 'Devaratha Sangam' is an indescribable experience where huge decorated marble chariots are pulled by thousands of devotees through the streets of Agrahara.
