Pattampi: Surabhi, who lives in Chundampata of Kulukallur Gram Panchayat, is paving the way for success in mushroom cultivation by using her interest in agriculture and hard work. Not being confined to being a housewife, this woman is creating a unique model of entrepreneurship by setting up two mushroom farms of her own.
Surabhi runs her mushroom farms under the name 'Victory'. Surabhi, who has been active in the field of mushroom cultivation for five years, is making progress by turning farming into an income stream and exploiting its potential.
The farm mainly produces chipotle suitable for the climate of Kerala. One mushroom bed can yield 700 grams to one kilogram. Mushrooms are sold at Rs 500 per kg. Surabhi is not limited to production but also prepares value added products including mushroom pickle. The aim is to expand the possibilities of the enterprise by making various products from mushrooms and bringing them to the market.
Before venturing into mushroom cultivation, Surabhi and her family received three days of training from the Pattambi Krishi Vigyan Kendra. The operations of the farm are carried forward by utilizing the knowledge and experience of agricultural practices.
Surabhi is also trying to find more market for the produce along with getting better income from agriculture. There is also a plan to market products including mushroom pickle through Kudumbashree fairs.
Surabhi's venture had received Rs 2 lakh for the farm and Rs 1 lakh for the packing unit through the Koongram scheme. Surabhi, a member of the Vikas Kudumbasree unit, was also supported by Kudumbasree in furthering the cultivation. Surabhi's mushroom farming is an example of how self-effort and proper planning can turn farming into a successful venture.
