PALAKKAD: Protesting against the government's failure to initiate paddy procurement even as nearly a month has passed since the commencement of the first crop harvest in the district, the BJP Kisan Morcha staged a blockade at the Supplyco office. Activists arrived at the Supplyco office near the Town Stand in Palakkad city and blockaded the officials.

As part of the protest, farmers raised slogans inside the office. Subsequently, discussions were held with the officials, but when they failed to give clear answers to questions regarding when the paddy procurement would begin and at what price the state would procure it, the farmers sat on the floor and staged a sit-in protest.
Accusation of Betrayal of Farmers
Kisan Morcha District President Ramesh inaugurated the protest. He alleged that the government, which came to power promising solutions to all agricultural issues, has betrayed the farmers. The government has not taken any steps so far regarding paddy procurement.
With it raining daily, farmers are in a plight where they cannot even store the harvested paddy. While the district ought to have four Paddy Marketing Officers, there are currently only two. Leaders accused the government of failing to take any action to enter into agreements with mill owners or make decisions regarding price distribution.

As the farmers resumed raising slogans, the police arrived at the scene and forcefully arrested and removed the activists.
